Nigerian 419 Internet Scammers dupe Victorians

Image
New research shows bogus promises of fabulous wealth, courtesy of unsolicited emails, continue to trick unsuspecting consumers to part with up to $120,000, despite repeated warnings by authorities. Older Australians, in particular, are more likely to be vulnerable to the online scammers. The Australian Institute of Criminology released the results yesterday of a survey of 202 Victorians who sent cash to Nigeria. Some were victims of online dating scams and fraudulent job offers but most fell prey to "advance fee scams" -- promises of huge cash rewards from Nigerian princes and other fake identities if they transferred money upfront. Nigeria Is Still #1 Riskiest Country For Online Fraud Unchallenged

28 Jan 2008 14:00 Africa/Lagos "Certainly Nigeria's persistent notoriety among eCommerce merchants is enhanced by the ubiquitous 'Nigerian Scam' letters," said Doug Schwegman, CyberSource director of customer and market intelligence. "Russia dropping off the list this year may simply mean merchants have given up shipping even digital products to that country due to negative outcomes in the past. But the real message of these findings is that fraud remains a significant issue in the lives of eCommerce merchants. But as always, we remind merchants that no one tool is a silver anti-fraud bullet -- that combinations of tools work best to root out cybercrime." Promoting Internet Fraud through Music!

Promoting Internet Fraud through Music! By Bayo Olupohunda I write to express my dismay at the growing damage some Nigerian music, their promoters and recording labels are doing to the current fight against corrupt tendencies and internet scam among the youths in our country. This is even more hurting taking into consideration that internet scam and their perpetrators known as Yahoo boys are mostly youths. Pop culture has become a fad among youths so it is expected that the message churned out in the lyrics of hip hop songs will affect their behaviour and belief system either negatively or positively. I have listened with concern the lyrics of a certain hip hop song currently enjoying massive air play on our radio stations. ...
