Kogi: The People Have Spoken!

Image
Captain Idris Wada, the newly elected Governor Kogi State, Nigeria. Kogi: The People Have Spoken! ~ By Ibrahim Usman. ‘The voice of the people is the voice of God’, that adage is from the Greek; the civilization which gave us democracy as we know it today, and the statement was speaking in defense of the principle which accords absolute respect to the decision of the people of a nation in choosing their own leaders for themselves. No more the time of imposition of emperors and kings upon a hapless citizenry, no more the passage of the mantle of leadership from one son to th~ e other within a royal dynasty, with absolute disregard to the will of the people. In this era, it is what the people want that matters and nothing more! That is why it is called democracy: government of the people, for the people and by the people. Where the will of the man on the street is not represented, it becomes an aberration! The people of the Kogi state have gone to the polls to demonstrate their absolute ...

Who is Afraid of Captain Idris Wada?

Image
Captain Idris Wada Who is Afraid of Captain Idris Wada? ~ By Ibrahim Usman Americans have a perfect word for it, they call it a ‘cop out’, it is a perfect loser’s way of turning tail rather than stand up for a fight! An incompetent amateur who happens upon a pair of boxing gloves by accident, wants to impress his girlfriend and family members by signing up for a bout in the ring! But unfortunately (or should we say fortunately for him?) before the fight, somebody tells him the bitter truth which is he might end up with a permanently broken jaw. So how does he avoid self destruction, he says the other boxer is not good enough for him and walks away! In a way it is a manner of eating the humble pie and admitting one’s inabilities and facing the truth. But at the same time, it is also very annoying for the spectators who have spent their hard earned money to come see a fight, only to be fed that arrant nonsense! For such crowd, the lily livered fool deserves nothing but a lynching! No mat...

During an assessment of the humanitarian needs in various parts of Libya, IOM staff reported on the plight of a large community of mostly African and Filipino migrant workers sheltering in two sites in the capital, Tripoli. Staff say some of the migrants have been without jobs since the beginning of the crisis as their employers had left the country. Feeling they have nothing to return to, they stay on in Libya in the vain hope that they may receive back pay from their employers or find another job. Others have been left to take care of employers' properties but have not been paid since February. The majority, from Ghana, Togo, Sudan, Nigeria, Cameroon and o...

The Niger Delta Palaver

THE NIGER DELTA PALAVER The ruling People's Democratic Party(PDP)is wasting time setting up kangaroo Rivers State Truth and Reconciliation Commission where the former governor Dr. Peter Odili has been telling lies in defence of the PDP, the most corrupt and notorious political party in Africa. It has been a comedy of errors so far. The rogue gallery is a mockery of democracy and the rule of law. The Niger Delta Summit is going to be another opportunity for the misappropriation of our revenue allocations by the political contractors in power and cannot bring the chief perpetrators of the Niger Delta crisis to book. The Niger Delta crisis can be solved within one month if we have a fearless revolutionary leader like Jerry Rawlings of Ghana to sack the PDP and commence the arrest and trial of all the top dogs and pigs who have acquired illegal oil blocks they shared among themselves since 1979 to date. The plutocratic oligarchy has been in power since 1979 when the retired General Ol...

Fidel Castro: The Great Hero of African Liberation

Image
Fidel Castro, the Lion of Cuba Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz retired as the President and Commander-in-Chief of Cuba on Monday February 18, 2008, after 49 years in power. Fidel Castro is the most lionized foreign leader in Africa and highly esteemed as one of the heroes of the liberation struggles in South African nations. Fidel Castro sent Cuban troops to Angola on November 4, 1975, to join the forces of the marxist MPLA-ruled government in the war against the racist South African-backed UNITA rebels. One of the survivors, Claude Grace Uushona can still remember how she survived the massacre in the refugee camp in Cassinga, in southern Angola and was rescued and brought to Cuba when she was only 16. "It was a camp for women and children refugees located 250 km from the border with Namibia. On May 4, 1978, South African forces bombed us with military helicopters and planes," she recalled. Cuban and Angolan troops helped the guerrilla freedom fighters of the Southwest African Pe...

Nigeria Is Still #1 Riskiest Country For Online Fraud Unchallenged

28 Jan 2008 14:00 Africa/Lagos "Certainly Nigeria's persistent notoriety among eCommerce merchants is enhanced by the ubiquitous 'Nigerian Scam' letters," said Doug Schwegman, CyberSource director of customer and market intelligence. "Russia dropping off the list this year may simply mean merchants have given up shipping even digital products to that country due to negative outcomes in the past. But the real message of these findings is that fraud remains a significant issue in the lives of eCommerce merchants. We do see increasing popularity of IP Geolocation, a tool that gives merchants information on the location of an internet-connected computer based on its internet protocol address. But as always, we remind merchants that no one tool is a silver anti-fraud bullet -- that combinations of tools work best to root out cybercrime."
