Five Years after the Fall of Baghdad: Honoring the Sacrifice of Michael Monsoor by Newt Gingrich (more by this author) Posted 04/08/2008 ET As we listen to General Petraeus ' testimony to Congress this week and mark, on Wednesday, the fifth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad, we should keep in mind the number of young Americans who have sacrificed their lives for America. Any judgment we make about where we are and what we must do in Iraq must be conditioned by the courage and commitment of those who have volunteered to protect us. General David H. Petraeus Consider Mike Monsoor as just one example of those who believe in the cause of freedom and believe in protecting America. Petty Officer Second Class Michael Anthony Monsoor (April 5, 1981 – September 29, 2006) was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor . He Yelled "Grenade!" but It Was Too Late On the morning of September 29, 2006, Petty Officer 2nd Class Mike Monsoor was on duty with three fellow Navy SEALs on a roo...

So? ... A Note from Michael Moore

So? ... A Note from Michael Moore Monday, March 24th, 2008 Friends, It would have to happen on Easter Sunday, wouldn't it, that the 4,000th American soldier would die in Iraq. Play me that crazy preacher again, will you, about how maybe God, in all his infinite wisdom, may not exactly be blessing America these days. Is anyone surprised? 4,000 dead. Unofficial estimates are that there may be up to 100,000 wounded, injured, or mentally ruined by this war. And there could be up to a million Iraqi dead. We will pay the consequences of this for a long, long time. God will keep blessing America. And where is Darth Vader in all this? A reporter from ABC News this week told Dick Cheney, in regards to Iraq, "two-thirds of Americans say it's not worth fighting." Cheney cut her off with a one word answer: "So?" "So?" As in, "So what?" As in, "F*** you. I could care less." I would like every American to see Cheney flip the virtual bird at t...

(Atlantic and Latin America editions). Moscow Bureau Chief Owen Matthews and Special Correspondent Anna Nemtsova report that Russia's real politics happens in and around the Kremlin, and it's a ruthless battle for money and influence. As Vladimir Putin prepares to step down (as he's constitutionally obliged to do), the clans that control the power of the Russian state are maneuvering frantically to protect their business empires-and, in some cases, their lives. Matthews and Nemtsova also report that the battle also involves ideological disagreements on economic and foreign policy, disagreements that will determine whether Russia emerges as a more or less autocratic, more or less open to free markets and Western influence. http://www.newsweek.com/id/73233 (Photo: http://www.newsco...

Time for a Kitchen Table Conversation: Iraq War Funding Bill Costs $500 per U.S. Family WASHINGTON, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Congress returns to work this week under pressure from the Administration and congressional Republicans to provide more funding for the Iraq war. One of the things Americans should consider: The bill to fund further operations in Iraq would cost a little over $500 per U.S. family, according to WashingtonWatch.com. "American families should have a kitchen table conversation about the Iraq war," said WashingtonWatch.com webmaster Jim Harper. "It may be hard for families to assess our strategy in Iraq, but it's easy to grasp what it means for the government to spend $500 of their money. This is one of the things Americans should weigh on the Iraq issue." WashingtonWatch.com uses government predictions about the costs or savings from proposed laws to calculate the significance to average Americans - in dollars and cents - of proposed ...
