The nuclear accident that occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine? Re : Russia woos Nigeria on nuclear power plant The Guardian newspaper of Nigeria reported on Monday, 01 August 2011 that Russia is bidding to build Nigeria’s first nuclear plant. It is the most unfortunate thing that will happen to this country. Yes it works in the developed countries, but they have actually been challenged by the difficulties to manage their various nuclear plants and at a great cost too. We don’t have the technological advancement to handle it. We can’t even maintain our roads, railways, no national carrier, etc. Look at the white elephant project at Ajaokuta and the mismanaged Delta Steel project which was almost taken over by the son of one of Nigeria’s former rulers. Our tertiary institutions cannot be upgraded where you see our beautiful daughters going to toilet with polythene bags while those who have ruled this country instead of upgrading them have establish...

President Bush to Russia: Honor Georgia Cease-fire

16 Aug 2008 15:06 Africa/Lagos Radio Address of President Bush to the Nation WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a transcript of the weekly radio address by President Bush: THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. For more than a week, the people of the nation of Georgia have withstood assault from the Russian military. The world has watched with alarm as Russia invaded a sovereign neighboring state and threatened a democratic government elected by its people. This act is completely unacceptable to the free nations of the world. The United States and our allies stand with the people of Georgia and their democratically elected government. We insist that Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity be respected. And Moscow must honor its pledge to withdraw its invading forces from all Georgian territory. Earlier this week I directed a series of steps to demonstrate America's solidarity with the Georgian people and to help bring about a peaceful resolutio...

(Atlantic and Latin America editions). Moscow Bureau Chief Owen Matthews and Special Correspondent Anna Nemtsova report that Russia's real politics happens in and around the Kremlin, and it's a ruthless battle for money and influence. As Vladimir Putin prepares to step down (as he's constitutionally obliged to do), the clans that control the power of the Russian state are maneuvering frantically to protect their business empires-and, in some cases, their lives. Matthews and Nemtsova also report that the battle also involves ideological disagreements on economic and foreign policy, disagreements that will determine whether Russia emerges as a more or less autocratic, more or less open to free markets and Western influence. http://www.newsweek.com/id/73233 (Photo: http://www.newsco...

Former Putin Advisor Slams Russian Election as Fraud

Dec 1, 2007 07:00 Africa/Lagos Former Putin Advisor Slams Russian Election as Fraud WASHINGTON, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Andrei Illarionov, Cato Institute Senior Fellow and former advisor to Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, comments on the upcoming Russian poll: "The Russian parliamentary election that is scheduled on December 2, 2007 became illegal and unlawful even before its official start. It meets none of the criteria of a free, fair, and democratic election. In effect it is not even an election. Over the last several years the Russian authorities have undertaken many changes in the electoral law that made electoral rules effectively undemocratic and participation in the election for a real political opposition party next to impossible. But even these undemocratic laws and rules have been severely violated over last several months. The number and severity of violations of the electoral laws and of world-wide accepted electoral practices exceeds all imagina...
