Top Hollywood Sex Symbols for 2012 African Movie Academy Awards


Hollywood sex symbol Maya Gilbert is one of the top Hollywood stars expected to grace the red carpet of the 2012 AMAA in Lagos, Nigeria. She is famous for her roles in Harry's Law, The Good Life, Underwater (2012 and several movies and TV series.



Top Hollywood sex symbols of the silver screen are coming to add to the glitz and razzmatazz on the red carpet of the 8th African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) to be hosted by the popular African American actor Jimmy Jean-Louis of the Phatz Girls fame. The lineup include Lynn Whitfield, Maya Gilbert , Morris Chestnut and Rockmond Dunbar.

Morris L. Chestnut is well known for his roles as teenage father Ricky Baker in the 1991 film Boyz n the Hood, groom-to-be Lance Sullivan in the 1999 film The Best Man, as Tracy Reynolds, NBA star in the 2002 film Like Mike.

This year’s AMAA will be held outside Bayelsa State for the first time since it has now relocated to the mega city of Lagos, because the event has grown bigger and larger for former venue in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. The venue for the star-studded event is the Expo Hall of the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites on the Victoria Island and the date is April 22.

Lynn Whitfield and her daughter Grace Gibson at the 7th annual Tribeca Film Festival for the movie “Tennessee” in NYC on 4/26. Lynn was a special guest of honour at the 2011 AFRIFF International Film Festival in Lagos. She has won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Special and a NAACP Image Award for her performance as Josephine Baker in the HBO movie The Josephine Baker Story (1991). She also won NAACP Image awards for her work in Touched by an Angel (1998), A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1996), Eve's Bayou (1997), The Planet of Junior Brown (2000), Redemption: The Stan Tookie Williams Story (2004), The Cheetah Girls (2003), Madea's Family Reunion (2006), The Cheetah Girls 2 (2006) and other movies.


Rockmond Dunbar is famous for his outstanding roles as Kenny Chadway on the Showtime television drama series Soul Food, and as Benjamin Miles "C-Note" Franklin on the FOX television drama series Prison Break.


Adesuwa, the epic movie by Lancelot Imaseun is the leading Nigerian movie with 10 nominations and tipped to win the AMAA 2012 for Best Nigerian Film.

AMAA 2012 will be the most competitive so far with 328 entries from across Africa, up from 220 entries in 2011. The AMAA's College of Screeners received 134 feature films, 88 short films, 57 documentaries and 6 animations. 43 of the entries came from Africans in the Diaspora, with the other entries coming from 23 countries across the continent. The host country Nigeria leads the others with 52 nominations, followed by South Africa with 45 nominations, Ghana has 17 nominations, Kenya has 14 nominations, Uganda has 5 nominations, Tanzania has 3 nominations and the remaining nominations shared by Algeria, Cameroon, Guinea, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe. South Africa’s film Otelo Burning leads in nominees (13), followed by another South African film How 2 Steal 2 Million (11) and Nigeria’s historical epic Adesuwa (10)., Ghana’s civil war film Somewhere in Africa (7), the Nigerian-South African film Man on Ground (7), and Kenya’s Rugged Priest (6).

Dr. Asantewa Olantunji, Director of Programming of the Pan African Film Festival heads the 2012 AMAA jury, which includes June Giavanni, Programmer for Planet Africa at The Toronto International Film Festival; Keith Shiri, Founder and film curator at the London festival, Africa at The Pictures; Dorothee Wenner, a curator at the Berlin Film Festival; Shaibu Husseini, an actor, dancer and The Nigerian Guardian arts journalist; Steve Ayorinde, Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Mirror; Ayoko Babu, Executive Director of the Pan African Film Festival; Dr. Hyginus Ekwuazi, a film scholar and critic; and directors Berni Goldblat and John Akomfrah, OBE.

“Africa’s economies are consistently growing faster than those of almost any other region of the world and our film industries are following suit.
