Happy Easter! But Lest We Forget...

7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.
8 that he lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding.

~ Ephesians 1:7-8, Holy Bible (New International Version).

Friday, March 29, 2013

Lest We Forget

"But He [Jesus] was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed."1

Today is Good Friday, the day we remember with profound appreciation that it was for this day that Jesus came to earth … to die in our place on that cruel Roman cross to save us from the terrible consequences of sin—a disease far deadlier than AIDS or any other disease that is a physical death sentence.

Today, we also remember that Jesus Christ was not an ordinary man. True, he was a man but he was and is the Son of the Living God—the Great Creator who became our Savior—the one who laid aside his external garments of deity, stepped out of the Ivory Palaces of Heaven, clothed himself in a garment of human flesh and came to earth to pay the redemption price for our sin. He died on the cross in your place and mine. In so doing he provided the only cure for the deadly disease of sin whose sentence is spiritual and eternal death.

Today, we remember, too, that without Jesus as our Savior, we would be headed for hell from which there is no escape beyond the grave. Wherever and whatever hell is we can be sure of this, it is eternal disconnection from God the author of all love and life—cut off forever from all love and all loving relationships. Such consequences are unthinkable.

And today we need to remember that Jesus died for us because he loved us far more than we can even begin to understand. As another has said, Jesus would rather go to hell for us than to go to heaven without us! This he did when he died on the cross in your place and in mine.

Jesus gave his life that we might live. In thanksgiving to him for his unspeakable gift, may we give our life to live for him—to help spread the gospel so that others might also live. For without Jesus, people are lost forever!

If you have never thanked Jesus for dying on the cross to pay the price for your sins, I urge you to do this today, and accept Jesus as your Savior and receive God's forgiveness and the assurance of a home in heaven forever. To help you be sure to read the article, "How to Be Sure You're a Real Christian—without having to be religious at: and/or "God's Invitation" at:

Suggested prayer: "Dear God, how can I ever thank you enough for loving me enough to give your Son Jesus to die on the cross in my place to pay the penalty for all my sins? And dear Jesus I do thank you from the depths of my heart for what you did for me. Please help me to live a life of thanksgiving to you always in all ways. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, in Jesus' name, amen."

1. Isaiah 53:5 (NKJV).

First Baptist Church Dallas New $130 Million Lights Fountain Campus Ready for Easter Sunday

In a dramatic ceremony March 24, 2013, First Baptist Dallas lit the 68-foot cross-tower fountain at the heart of its new $130 million campus opening Easter Sunday.

First Baptist Church Dallas Lights Fountain of New $130 Million Campus Set to Open Easter Sunday

Three-Quarter Acre Fountain Plaza Contributes to Greening and Grandeur of Downtown Revitalization

DALLAS, March 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — First Baptist Church of Dallas, which will open its new state-of-the-art $130 million campus, the largest Protestant church building campaign in modern history, on Easter Sunday, began the first of its month-long grand opening celebrations last night with the lighting and dedication of the high-impact cross-tower fountain.

“We gather tonight with a clear purpose, not to celebrate a new building but to celebrate new life in Jesus Christ,” said Dr. Robert Jeffress, pastor of First Baptist Church. “Next week we change our place of worship, but some things never change – God, our love for Him and the Gospel. The fellowship of our congregation remains unbroken from this place to the next, bonding us together.”

At the close of the final evening worship service in the historic 122-year-old sanctuary, the lights were turned off and First Baptist congregation members each lit a candle in the darkness. They then followed Jeffress in a silent processional out of the original facility to the Fountain Plaza, symbolizing the church’s commitment to carry the light of the Gospel message with them from their former meeting place to the new campus and into the world.

On March 24, 2013, thousands of First Baptist Dallas congregants carried candles symbolizing the light of the Gospel, to the new $130 million campus opening Easter Sunday.

“More than anything we want our church to represent the amazing grace God offers,” Jeffress said after leading the crowd in an a cappella version of “Amazing Grace.” “We want to be the love of God, and we want for people who come on our campus to know we are a church.”

First Baptist Dallas Pastor Robert Jeffress listens as a custom rendition of a popular hymn accompanies the inaugural lighting on the Fountain Plaza of the new $130 million campus.

Following a 10-second countdown by the pastor, the cross-tower structure and new campus buildings were dramatically lit as fountains danced to the classic hymn of the faith, “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name,” one of several custom orchestral scores of anthems and spiritual songs created to accompany the programmed flow of the cascading water and jets.

The fountain, which is centrally located on the three-quarter acre plaza and community space, serves as the grand entrance of the new campus, featuring a stainless steel cross atop a pedestal rising 68-feet-high. Surrounding the tower is a shallow water pool containing a heated baptistery as well as eight water canons and 21 undulating titan water jets. Water spilling over the tower wall at the base of the cross emulates white-water movement before creating waves in the pool.

The water calms prior to floating over the edge inscribed with a Scripture text from John 4:14, stating, “Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.”

First Baptist will hold its first service in the new 3,000-seat Worship Center of the state-of-the-art, 500,000-square-foot campus March 31. Physically changing the landscape of the Dallas skyline, the new campus is united in function and design as well as open, accessible and easily identifiable as an iconic church in the heart of the city.

First Baptist is committed to boldly sharing the Gospel. The church has been located at its current location since 1868, and has experienced the ebbs and flows of the downtown economy, consistently remaining committed to God and the people of Dallas. For more information, visit

There Will Never Be Another Chinua Achebe, But…

There Will Never Be Another Chinua Achebe, But…

When I was a boy growing up in Nigeria, becoming a novelist was a far-away dream.

~ Chinua Achebe as the recipient of the 2010 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, when he was the David and Marianna Fisher University Professor and professor of Africana studies at Brown University, USA.

I thought today would be one of my happiest days.
I was well dressed in my favourite blue shirt and cream trousers and black shoes. And I thanked God its Friday.
I had an appointment to interview Greek Nigerian singer Jojo Stavro at D'Stage on Modupe Johnson Crescent in Surulere, Lagos.
I had to see my one and only first lady before entering the car.
She knew where I was going to.
"What should I get you?" I asked her.
"Anything you want to," she replied.
She hardly asked me for anything, because she knew I would always get her what she loved.
Even the gold necklace to be customized for her is coming without her asking for it.
She had a headache yesterday and I told her to get rid of all negative thoughts.
But I could not keep the shocking news from her.
"They said Chinua Achebe is dead," I told her slowly and not aloud.
She was speechless for a moment.
"But I will not report it until the news is confirmed," I said.
She sighed.
I love her so much that I don't want anything to upset her.
The report of the death of a loved one leaves a sour taste in the mouth and sudden cold with fever may grip you.
We all loved Achebe.
She loves books and I always give her special gifts of books and she loves my books too and even has a copy of one of my books that no one else has in Nigeria.
The book is not yet distributed in Nigeria.
I wanted her to be happy.
But how can we be happy today when the bad news of the passing of one of the greatest men of books is making headlines and making us sad?
She was sober.

I left still thinking of her and reflecting on the awesome literary life of Chinua Achebe.
How would Wole Soyinka take it?
Soyinka the first black Nobel Prize winner in literature loved and respected Achebe and both of them are regarded as the pillars of the phenomenal greatness of Nigerian literature in Africa and the rest of the world. They have inspired millions of us.
Chinua Achebe’s all time classic Things Fall Apart has been a must read for decades since the publication in 1958. The novel has sold 11 million copies so far and translated into more than 50 languages. And the other books following have established him as a literary genius and icon of modern literature winning many highly coveted prizes and academic honours that made him one of the most decorated writers in history.

As I sit in my office to write this short tribute, my youngest best friend Janet is knocking at the door as she returns from nursery school accompanied by her mother who is pregnant with another baby who will be two years younger than Janet who celebrated her second birthday in January. Janet cannot pass by my office without saying hello and she has been doing so for over a year. Her parents and neighbors are awed by our remarkable friendship which began when she was not yet a year old.
I open the door and let her in as she greets cheerfully and then passes through the backdoor of the office to rejoin her mother in the verandah leading to their flat at the back of the block. Then I return to continue writing my tribute.
All adults were once as little Janet, innocent and free and totally oblivious of growing old and then passing away one day.
We are all innocent of our existence on earth. None of us asked to be born.
At times like this, I reflect on life from the womb to the tomb and the thoughts of losing beautiful and wonderful people leave me dumb and numb.
I want to celebrate life and live life in love, peace and unity and not in fear and sorrow of an uncertain tomorrow.

So, as we mourn the greatest patriarch of Nigerian literature Chinua Achebe, let us celebrate the illustrious life of his wonderful prose, poetry and drama of the romance of human existence in a mysterious world.

I know that there will never be another Chinua Achebe, but I trust God to comfort the bereaved families, friends, relations, associates, well wishers and the rest of us and give us more grace to appreciate the geniuses still living and walking among us. They many not shine as bright as Achebe and his peers, but they are still shining stars illuminating our world in their own special ways.

Achebe has played his great role on the stage of life, let us not forget to play our own roles even with more challenges and do greater exploits that will make the world remember Achebe as our great inspiration for the manifestation of the kindred spirits of a new generation that will lead our beloved nation to rock and rule the world.

Postmaster General Says Technology is Making Mail More Powerful

Urges Mailing Industry to Focus on Innovation in Delivery, Digital Integration and Targeting

SAN FRANCISCO, March 18, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Technology and changing consumer expectations are helping to transform mail into an even more powerful communications channel, Postmaster General and CEO Patrick R. Donahoe told the nation's largest annual gathering of mailing industry leaders today.

"As the mailing industry, we must continue to work to drive innovation and leverage data and technology to improve the consumer experience and grow revenue," Donahoe said in his keynote address at the National Postal Forum. "Our challenge as an industry is to shape those moments when people are experiencing mail, and make them more powerful in the future. That's part of getting our game on — shaping our future and building excitement about the power of mail and the future of mail."

Mail already has an advantage over other ways of communicating, Donahoe said, because it is tactile and encourages users to interact with it. "People slow down and absorb what they receive. They process it. They retain it," he said. To strengthen that experience, Donahoe urged the mailing industry to focus on four key ideas: making mail more personally relevant, more actionable, more functional and more creative.

"Through the convergence of data and technology, mailers can use the insights about individual interests to make mail more personal," he said. "With imbedded QR codes and augmented reality, mail becomes much more functional and creative, creating an even more influential experience."

Donahoe also touted the fact that American businesses are spending the same percentage of their marketing dollars on mail today as they did 30 years ago.

"Even with the emergence of cable television, social media and smartphones, marketing mail has remained constant because of the tremendous value it delivers to consumers who receive it and its ability to drive an exceptional return on investment for the businesses who send it," said Donahoe. "The growth of our industry is going to be driven by changing technologies and customer expectations. We have to work together as an industry to anticipate these changes by leveraging the value of mail to shape new opportunities."

The Postmaster General also advanced themes relating to innovation in the Postal Service in the areas of delivery, digital integration and targeting to extend the delivery platform and provide growth opportunities for the mailing industry and America's businesses.

"Innovating digital integration is fundamental to improving the consumer experience — and combining the targeting power of online advertising with that mail experience will make mail far more valuable to the receiver and the sender," Donahoe said.

The Postmaster General also described the Postal Services' aggressive cost reduction efforts and their impacts on the mailing industry: reducing the size of the workforce by 193,000 employees since 2006; reducing the organization's cost base by $15 billion; reducing 21,000 delivery routes; and consolidating the network of mail processing facilities while maintaining record levels of service.

"No other organization that I can think of — either public or private — has gone through a similar downsizing so rapidly and continued to function at a high level," said Donahoe. "It all comes down to one word for this industry: affordability. The faster we can reduce costs, the better we can avoid pressure to raise prices. That's why we continue to seek comprehensive reform legislation to provide more flexibility in our business model to create a sustainable platform for the future."

A video of the speech will be posted online when it is available at

The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

A self-supporting government enterprise, the U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 152 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations. With more than 31,000 retail locations and the most frequently visited website in the federal government,, the Postal Service has annual revenue of more than $65 billion and delivers nearly 40 percent of the world's mail. If it were a private-sector company, the U.S. Postal Service would rank 42nd in the 2012 Fortune 500. The Postal Service has been named the Most Trusted Government Agency for seven years and the fourth Most Trusted Business in the nation by the Ponemon Institute.

Transparency International Calls on President Jonathan To Rescind the Pardon of His Boss DSP

17 Mar 2013 13:46 Africa/Lagos

Transparency International calls on Nigerian president to rescind controversial pardon of corrupt politician

BERLIN, 14 March 2013 / PRNewswire Africa / - Transparency International, the global anti-corruption organisation, calls on President Goodluck Jonathan to rescind the pardon granted to Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha ("DSP"), the former governor of the oil-rich state of Bayelsa, who was convicted for money laundering and other serious corruption offences in 2007.

“This decision undermines anti-corruption efforts in Nigeria and encourages impunity. If the government is serious about uprooting public corruption, sanctions against those who betray the public trust should be strengthened, not relaxed,” said Akere Muna, vice-chair of Transparency International.

Mr. Alamieyeseigha will now be able to stand for public office again.

President Jonathan should show that he is committed to fighting corruption and endorse the efforts of law enforcement agencies to end impunity for corrupt officials.

Nigeria was ranked 139 out of 174 countries in the 2012 Corruptions Perceptions Index. Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has prosecuted and convicted a number of high-profile corrupt individuals since its inception in 2003, but most of them have escaped effective sanctions.

Kupo, The Next Famous Pet On Facebook

Kupo the Fluffy White Dog on His Way to Becoming the Internet's Next Famous Pet with Facebook Milestone

SAN FRANCISCO, March 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Sometimes people say he looks like a rug. Other times, he is mistaken for a teddy bear. However, if there's one thing certain about Kupo, no one would call him unpopular. With a growing audience for his Facebook page, this fluffy white puppy is rapidly becoming the next internet sensation, following in the paw-steps of his idols, Boo, the world's cutest dog, and Mark Zuckerberg's own dog Beast.

(Photo: )

Kupo's Facebook page has just passed 100,000 likes, no small feat for a puppy that's less than a year old. But if his recent posts are any indication, he's set his sights higher, looking to reach a million likes and entering into the rarefied space reserved for only a small handful of famous pooches.

Kupo's page features daily posts where he shares photos of his adventures, answers questions, and gives advice. Ranging from uplifting to silly, he speaks with confidence in his posts, despite his breed not being known to be the smartest. For example, in one post answering the frequently asked question of how he's able to see through all his hair, he enthusiastically answered "With my nose!", addressing the question, but raising more curiosity about this delightful little dog.

While interest in Kupo initially started in the United States, his popularity has extended internationally, and he has now amassed a strong fan base in Brazil where followers affectionately cry out "Fofo" and "Lindo" each time he posts a new photo.

The popularity of Kupo has helped raise awareness of the Coton de Tulear, an uncommon breed that's being increasingly recommended for its unique combination of being extremely soft and fluffy, while being non-sheding and hypoallergenic. In addition to having no congenital health issues and minimal exercise requirements, a Coton can be a great choice for many families looking for a friendly lap pet to live indoors.

Kupo has also recently expanded his presence to Twitter and Pinterest as well, and in the coming year may look to offline channels as well.

If you want to support one dog's dreams of making it big, or just need a daily dose of cute in your life, like Kupo on Facebook today.

DESIRE is A Must See Thriller

DESIRE starring Homeland star Damian Lewis tells the story of Clark (Lewis), who delivers cars for a living, running into trouble after a chance encounter with a mysterious young woman (Sossamon) in the middle of a lawless desert. Directed by Adam Smith, this is a story of betrayal, retribution, passion and greed.

"It promises to be an adventure," says Damian.
"Jaguar cars have played some iconic roles in film for many years and I'm looking forward to being the first to drive the F-TYPE in film."

Desire was directed by Adam Smith and produced by Ridley Scott Associates and the première is in April.

The following is the full report of the press release.

Golden Globe and Emmy Award winning actor, Damian Lewis, plays the lead in a short feature film, created by Jaguar in association with Ridley Scott Associates and to be released early 2013.

The soundtrack to the film has been written by singer songwriter Lana Del Rey. The exclusive track named 'Burning Desire', was inspired by the Jaguar F-TYPE.

The F-TYPE is the first two-seater sports car from Jaguar since the iconic E-type was launched 50 years ago.

Today, Jaguar and Ridley Scott Associates released the trailer to their short feature film named ‘Desire’. The film stars Golden Globe winner Damian Lewis, Jordi Molla and Shannyn Sossamon alongside the all-new Jaguar F-TYPE. Lana Del Rey, who recently won a BRIT for Best International Female, has written the title song ‘Burning Desire’.

The breathtaking trailer gives a tantalising glimpse of what’s in store for viewers when the film is released later this Spring and paints a picture of the dramatic storyline without giving too much away.
It’s also a chance to see the award winning line-up of cast members in action, as well as the brand new F-TYPE, that will take centre-stage in the film.
Casper Delaney, Producer, Ridley Scott Associates comments:

"After weeks and months of working on the script and developing the film with Jaguar, it’s fantastic to see it come to life."

The trailer gives a hint to what viewers can expect from the short film, which will be released in April.

Damian Lewis commented:

"When Jaguar approached me about the F-TYPE Desire film I was really intrigued. I then got to read the script and decided it was definitely a project I wanted to be a part of. Working with the director Adam Smith from Ridley Scott Associates, it promises to be an adventure. Jaguar cars have played some iconic roles in film for many years and I'm looking forward to being the first to drive the F-TYPE in film".

Where Are the 44 Million Nigerians On the Internet?

Where Are the 44 Million Nigerians On the Internet?

Nigeria reportedly has about 44 million internet users in 2013.
We are the most populous nation in Africa, so I am not surprised. With a population of about 170 million people, we should even have more than 44 million Nigerians using the internet since we have over 100 million users of mobile phones and almost all the mobile phones have access to the internet. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reported that mobile subscriber base in Nigeria will increase to 120 million in 2013.

Tracking the whereabouts of the 44 million Nigerians on the internet has not been easy, from Nairaland to Facebook and Twitter.
I found out that majority of the Nigerian internet users are those using Yahoo, Gmail and Hotmail just for emails. There are currently about 5, 357, 500 Nigerians on Facebook and they are the largest population of Nigerians on any social network site. Most of them are the same people visiting Nairaland, the most popular Nigerian website. But the rest are simply exchanging emails on Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail and other email messaging websites.
