Chika Anadu's "B for Boy" Wins Two Prizes at 2014 Africa Movie Academy Awards


Emerging young Nigerian filmmaker Chika Anadu, Breakthrough Award winning first feature “B for Boy” won two awards for Best Film In An African Language and Best Film For Women Empowerment Saturday night at the 10th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held at the Dr. Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre in Yenagoa, the capital city of Bayelsa state in Nigeria.


"B For Boy" won the 2013 Breakthrough Award with US$5,000 cash prize at the AFI FEST 2013, American Film Institute's annual celebration of international cinema from modern masters and emerging filmmakers.


The realistic contemporary Nigerian drama in Igbo language focuses on the prerogative of the male child in Igbo society and one woman's desperate need for a male child; which reveals the discrimination of women in the names of culture and religion.
Starring Uche Nwadili, Nonso Odogwu, Ngozi Nwaneto and Frances Okeke.

It never occurred to me to make B for Boy in anything other than Igbo. It's a family drama, and we mostly speak Igbo in my family, so it didn't make sense to me to make it in English. My favourite films are in languages I don't understand, and it didn't stop me from enjoying them.

As a filmmaker you make your films with the audience you want to attract in mind. The audience I'm targeting doesn't care about the language spoken in the films they watch. They're interested in more important things like story, performance, cinematography etc.
Nollywood is a genre, and not the entire Nigerian film industry. However none of the 'New wave' of directors in Nigeria would know what was possible without the Nollywood model, so I'm grateful to them for showing us that our stories are of interest to people other than Nigerians. I would describe myself as a filmmaker, period.

Chika Anadu was born in Nigeria in 1980 and attended school in Lagos before heading to the UK in 1997, where she gained her degree in Law and Criminology. Nigerian American Rick Famuyiwa and Academy Award Winner Forest Whitaker Team Up for "Dope"


Indiewire's Shadow and Act reports that Nigerian American Rick Famuyiwa is teaming up with one of his Our Family Wedding stars, the famous Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker to produce his new film Dope.


Whitaker won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA for his unforgettable portrayal of Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in the 2006 film The Last King of Scotland.

Whitaker's Significant Productions (along with partner Nina Yang Bongiovi), as well as Pharrell Williams are all producing the film, which Famuyiwa has written and will direct, with a summer 2014 production start date eyed, in Los Angeles.

Dope's synopsis reads:

Malcolm Adekanbi is an anomaly, a "geek living in the bottoms," the drug-infested, gang-run ghetto part of Inglewood. A victim of circumstance, but with admirable ambition, Malcolm gets caught in the crossfires of a drug buy gone bad. Using his wits and considerable smarts, he manages to take a dicey situation and make it work in his favor.

How To Break Into Nollywood Without Stress

Nollywood is estimated to be worth US$5.1 billion (₦853.9 billion ) as at 2014 and continues to be Africa’s largest film industry and the second largest in the world in number of annual film productions.

Nollywood, produces about 50 movies per week, second only to India’s Bollywood—more than Hollywood in the United States. Although its revenues are not on par with Bollywood’s and Hollywood’s, Nollywood still generates an impressive $590 million annually. Believing that if the industry is properly managed, a million more jobs could be created in the sector, the World Bank is currently assisting the Nigerian government to create a Growth and Employment in States project to support the entertainment industry, along with other industries.

Nollywood contributed in boosting the rebased Nigerian economy and increasing the gross domestic product (GDP) to $510 billion from $262 billion making Nigeria the largest economy in Africa and the world’s 24th largest economy. And Nollywood is the hope of over 5.3 million unemployed Nigerians with more than 1.8 million joining the congested job market every year according to the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Nollywood may not offer as many dream jobs as blue chip companies in Africa’s most populous country, but it is the second largest employer after agriculture with over one million people engaged in film production and distribution of the millions of copies of home videos sold in Nigeria and in other countries in Africa where Nollywood movies provide daily home entertainment and made the stars household names. But over 80% of the movies are pirated with impunity and the World Bank estimates that for every legitimate copy sold, nine others are pirated.

As much as Nollywood is booming and employing hundreds of thousands of people, breaking into the film industry and making it to stardom is not easy, because of the fierce competition for roles among the millions of aspiring actors and actresses who dream of being the next Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde, Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Noah and Mike Ezuruonye. There are always auditions every week, but majority of the unknown aspiring actors don’t often make the final cast. Many are called, but only few will be chosen. The producers and marketers prefer casting popular faces to attract the legions of their fans to buy the DVDs of the movies or go to the cinemas to watch them. So, the famous names make the posters while the unknown faces are mere shadows in the background. Yes, it is normal and it is nothing new, because the celebrated stars of today were among the unknown wannabes of yesterday until they paid their dues and had their breakthrough.

Chineze Anyaene's 2010 "Ijé - The Journey" cost $2.5 million and even though the film is still the highest grossing Nigerian film till date, both the returns from the local distributors in Nigeria and others abroad have not been enough to make the director smile to the bank, because the critically acclaimed and multiple award winning student film was not really a financial success.

The much talked about 2013 "Half of A Yellow Sun" by Biyi Bandele is the most expensive and expected Nigerian film, because of the international cast of celebrated Hollywood stars and the prominent local stars even though the most popular Nollywood star in the cast Genevieve Nnaji only appeared in one scene and her cameo is not spectacular enough to attract her legions of fans to the local movie theaters or to even buy copies of the DVD later like "Ijé" that gave her an unforgettable supporting actress role as "Chioma Opara" sister of "Anya Opara Michino" played by the leading actress and current Queen of Nollywood, Omotola Jolade-Ekeinde who gave a stellar performance and the fantastic combination of these two most popular actresses in Nollywood pulled crowds to the cinemas. But I doubt if the celebrated Hollywood stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton can do the same for "Half of A Yellow Sun" in Nigeria where only the middle class and upper class elites know their A-list star power status.


The director, producers and executive producers pinned all their hopes on them, but they forgot that using A-List actors do not always guarantee box office success as we have seen in many Hollywood big budget movies that bombed (flopped) at the box office.
Getting A-List actors cost a lot and betting on them to make a hit movie is a gamble. A hit or miss shot at the bull's eye.
Having A-List actors may attract major distributors for the film, but cannot guarantee puling crowds to the cinemas and that was what happened to "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" by Justin Chadwick. The film with famous Hollywood stars Idris Elba as "Nelson Mandela", Naomie Harris as "Winnie Madikizela-Mandela" cost $35 million, but has not made up to $28 million at the box office, even though it was a hit in South Africa released at the momentous time when the great hero of the biopic Madiba Nelson Mandela passed away.

The local distributors of "Half of A Yellow Sun" in Nigeria have dysfunctional marketing and public relations management and you cannot even see any promo on "Half of A Yellow Sun" on the websites of their few cinemas and I am yet to see the adverts in the press, except for the cheap radio jingles and the poorly promoted trailers on TV. So, Biyi Bandele and his executive producers need prayers for miracles to make their "Half of A Yellow Sun" a commercial success at home and abroad.
