Often referred to as "The Man in the White Stetson," Jim Leavelle was handcuffed to Oswald when the suspect was unexpectedly shot and killed by Jack Ruby, amid the media chaos trying to catch a glimpse of JFK's alleged assassin. Photos from this horrific moment are etched into the collective memory of the Kennedy assassination. In an intimate interview for CAPTURING OSWALD, Leavelle recalls details of Oswald's first interrogation as well as his final moments while en route to the hospital after being shot. He even admits to telling his captain that he thought it was a bad idea to escort Oswald through the basement and throngs of reporters, and recalls his captain's response: "If you're so concerned Jim, you escort him."

Paul McCaghren, a lieutenant assigned to the pre-planning team that was charged with securing the president's motorcade, faults several federal agencies for withholding information from the DPD —including Oswald's identity, threats he made against the United States, and the fact that his place of employment was on the parade route.

Elmer Boyd was one of the first detectives to search the Texas School Book Depository. In CAPTURING OSWALD, Boyd recalls the initial search of the depository and one officer's brief run-in with the then unknown suspect Lee Harvey Oswald.

The competition offers budding filmmakers the chance to realise their own short film, using their imagination to interpret a short film script created by Academy Award® winner Geoffrey Fletcher.

Now in its second year, Bombay Sapphire and Geoffrey Fletcher assembled a cross section of imaginative heavy weights from the world of film to judge the entries, which featured Academy Award® winning actor, Adrien Brody; screenwriter and film director, Lucy Mulloy; screenwriter, Naomi Foner; actor, Peter Facinelli; and senior curator at Vimeo, Sam Morrill, who between them selected nine films for their originality and imagination.

Maite Fernandez, a bookseller and comedian from Spain, for her film ‘Grafitti Area’

Chris Cornwell, a screenwriter from London, for his film ‘Exit Log’

Kiara Jones, a film student from the U.S., for her film ‘The Other Side of the Game’

Karen Pessina, Italy – ‘Tea Time’ is a thriller involving two men who pull over with a flat tire. When they seek help at a nearby house, an old lady offers them tea and muffins. One suddenly drops dead after eating a poisoned muffin. His partner is reunited with the old lady.

Allyson Morgan, USA – ‘Need for Speed (Dating)’ is a comedy about two friends that attend a speed dating event. They face a gaggle of unsavory guys one after the other and begin to think that all hope is gone. Fate intervenes and they each find a great match somewhat closer to home.

Giles Borg, UK – ‘The Search’ is a drama about a man who fears he’s the last man left on earth. He employs an old computer terminal, BOB, to scan CCTV footage for other signs of life. BOB finds other humans but, being lonely himself, does not tell John, who leaves, hopeless.

Effie Woods, UK – ‘Cutie Pie’ is a comedy about a man, Peter, who returns home to find he has been bought an adorable kitten by Maggie. Peter wants Maggie to return it when the kitten destroys the house. Despite their efforts to shake off the little monster, it continues to haunt them.

Hiroshi Momose, Japan – ‘The Value of Freedom’ is an animation set in the zoo. Two birds look out through bars at the sky beyond. One bird enlists help to escape the confines of the cage. Choosing to fly off into the unknown, the other bird chooses to stay, reassured by what it knows.

Named as a potential Oscar contender by both The Hollywood Reporter and Indiewire, "Call Me Kuchu" follows Uganda's first openly gay man, David Kato, and retired Anglican Bishop Christopher Senyonjo as they work against the clock to defeat an "Anti-Homosexuality Bill," inspired in part by American evangelical missionaries. As they work to combat the Bill, which proposes death for HIV-positive gay men and prison for anyone who fails to turn in a known homosexual, they must also fight vicious persecution in their daily lives. But no one is prepared for the brutal murder that shakes the movement to its core and sends shock waves around the world. "Call Me Kuchu" is a stirring portrait of human courage in the face of insurmountable odds.

Since premiering at the Berlin Film Festival, "Call Me Kuchu" has received more than 20 awards, including the prestigious Teddy Award in Berlin, and was selected as a New York Times Critics' Pick following its theatrical release in the US earlier this year. Both the Hollywood Reporter and Indiewire Magazine have named the film as a potential Oscar contender for the documentary category. Founded in commemoration of David Kato's life and work, the DKVVA provides recipients with $10,000 to further their efforts to advance LGBT rights in their own communities. ‘There are many African filmmakers, but there no African cinemas’
The need for an independent net of distribution and for an alternative funding, key aspects of the first FCAT Espacio Professional


Córdoba, 15th October 2013. FCAT Espacio Profesional, a spaced conceived for the critical debate on African cinemas, has started today at the African Film Festival of Cordoba. The activity has consisted of a twofold panel – on the one hand, the presentation of the book Les cinémas d'Afrique dans les années 2000 by the expert on African Film Criticism, Olivier Barlet; and a round table with African filmmakers and Barlet himself revolving around the present of African cinemas.

Olivier Barlet, has been accompanied by Carlos Domínguez, director of FCAT Espacio Profesional, eager to prompt the translation and publication of this book, into Spanish, firstly and secondly, in English; María Sylveyro, Head of the Editorial Ocho y Medio in Spain, who has stated that the idea of Ocho y Medio is to have this book published into Spanish by this date next year; and Marion Berger, FCAT Curator, who has highlighted from the book the questioning of the Western thoughts on Africa and the dynamism of the notions revolving around Africa. Olivier Barlet is one of the most prolific and relevant film critics specialized in the cinemas of Africa, as well as a key promoter of the film critic profession and genre in Africa. According to him, Les cinémas d'Afrique dans les années 2000, is a book following Mbembe’s idea of Europe not being the centre of the world any longer. ‘Africa teaches us how to understand the world, since Africa has already encountered the other, and they are used to the unexpected. Their capacity of action is very different and can teach the Western world a lot’, Barlet has stated. The book, whose departing points are not Western but Africans, has two aims – to understand the world and to learn about cinema.

In addition to Olivier Barlet, the second panel has hosted some of the most relevant experts on this field to discuss the current situation of African cinemas. Among them, South African filmmaker, Arya Lalloo, whose documentary film Jeppe on a Friday (2012) is in the official selection of FCAT Cordoba 2013; Algerian filmmaker, Lamine Ammar Khodja, and Senegalese filmmaker William M’baye, whose documentary film Président Dia (2012) is also lined up for the official selection of this festival. The panel has revolved around the need for finding new ways of funding both popular cinema and ‘cinéma d’ateur’ and for finding a solution to the lack of distribution that most of African countries are experiencing today.

Ousmane William M’ Baye, director of the documentary film Président Dia (2012, 54’), has provoked the very engaged audience and speakers at FCAT Espacio Profesional, by stating – ‘There are many African filmmakers, but there are no African cinemas’. M’Baye was referring to the presence of worldwide acclaimed filmmakers, that are usually framed as ‘African’, but the lack of exhibition of African cinemas in the continent. In the end, African films are screened elsewhere in European film festivals. This statement has very much entailed with Barlet’s reflection on the digital era, where Africans can easily create their own films, as ‘the image has always been a key aspect for communications in Africa’. However, there is not a learning process on this image and thus, the resulting images can be highly problematic and misrepresentative of Africa’. M’baye has claimed ‘an aesthetical wave in Africa, which is how we should respond to crisis’. In this way, the contribution of Arya Lalloo have been of great relevance, as she has highlighted the importance of ‘audience participation’, so we answer to the questions of ‘what cinema are we doing and for whom? There have been many changes, but the solution in cinema must be addressed through the film language itself’. This is why cinema as a mirror is not as relevant any more as cinema as a reflection. The South African filmmaker has highlighted the importance of a creation of an alternative circuit, as today the reason for the large number of co-productions is the lack of funding for independent creations.

The need for an independent distribution network

Algerian filmmaker, Lamine Ammar Khodja, shared as well his concern of the lack of distribution in Africa in general and in Algeria, in particular, where ‘there is just a State cinema with over 100 films per year, yet where people do not watch independent cinemas’. This is a frustrating situation, according to him, that could be solved if the State leave cinema for filmmakers, and engaged in the promotion of a fluid net for the ways of funding those cinemas.

Finally, Olivier Barlet has demanded as well the need for the co-existence of the duality popular cinema and cinema d’auteur – ‘The filmmaker must think of the artistic side of his work’. Barlet explained that the creation of new cinemas has nothing to do with the success regarding audience. For instance, in Chad there was a creative boom, a very big cinema was build up in the capital, but it barely gathered 21 spectators per day. He indicated as possible solutions the creation of schools of cinema and Film Reviews magazines in order to mobilise the audiences.

‘The future of African cinema lies on reinventing smart cinema’



The online distribution platform Africafilms.tv cements its collaboration with the African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT, offering five titles from the 18th October

The professional forum at the African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT, known as FCAT Espacio Profesional, has given voice today to the filmmakers of emerging projects aimed at the online distribution. The round table, ‘An outlook on the audiovisual sector in Africa’, has started with an outlook of the history of African film festivals, the relation with festivals and the digital, and the capacity of the festivals of building audiences and allowing the existence and distribution of African films. These points, supported by Dr Lindiwe Dovey, founder of London Film Africa, and professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies (U. London). This panellist has been followed by Enrico Chiesa, director of Africanfilms.tv, who has been contributing to the festival since the foundation of the online site in 2011. Chiesa has explained that they have just launched an initiative consisting on providing audiences with a series of films taken from the FCAT film archive. This initiative, that will start on the 18th of October, dovetailing with the closing and awards ceremony of the festival, will allow audiences to stream and watch these films in their own computers. ‘African film must enjoy the great advantages of the new ITCs in order to meet the enormous audience’, Enrico Chiesa has stated. The VoD (Video on Demand) site, funded by the ACP States and the European Union, aimed at promoting the African film sector and the cooperation among professionals in Africa, Spain and beyond. The project, based in Dakar, is also available in Mali and France, other than in Senegal. During his speech, the director of Africafilms.tv has highlighted the importance of reinventing smart cinema to prompt a popular cinema.


The five selected films to be provided out of charge to the surfers for a week are Ezra, by Nigerian filmmaker Newton I. Aduaka; the German-Kenyan coproduction Soul Boy, by Hawa Essuman; Surfing Soweto, by Sara Blecher; Il va pleuvoir sur Conakry, by Cheik Fantamady Camara, screened at the festival; and Jimmy Dakar Soul, by Marina Aguirre and David García, an international premier at FCAT Cordoba 2013.
However, Africafilms.tv is not the only one aimed at the online distribution of African cinemas. The round table has also counted on Russell Southwood, who has presented Smart Monkey Tv , a Youtube channel linked to Balancing Act, an online site devoted to information and communication of African issues and cultures. Southwood has shared Chiesa’s point on the necessity of enjoying the new tools, such as the smartphone, which has become the “medium of choice in Africa”.
FCAT Espacio Profesional concludes today with the forum of production and co-production in Africa and Spain. The festival will celebrate its closing and awards ceremony this evening, revealing the five winners out of the 27 films on competition.

The 10th African Film Festival of Cordoba will start in a week with over 66 screenings, filmmakers and producers invited for round tables, conferences and the FCAT Espacio Profesional, as well as an exhibition that has travelled from Malaga to Gorée Island and now, to Cordoba, and a wide range of parallel activities. From the 11th to the 19th of October, Cordoba will travel to our neighbouring continent, and even to the Middle East, through the screen.

The artist Dar Al Naim Mubarak, originally from Khartoum (Sudan), but with a multicultural professional and personal career, has been the one responsible for the creation of the image of the poster of the festival, filmed by Julio Castaño, from Yunaki Films, and whose Director of Photography has been the graphic designer of the FCAT, José Wela.

“I see Africa as a unit, as a very smart figure that one can recognise very easily”, this plastic artist highlights, while pointing out the nuances of her statement. “We, as Africans, are a very big community, and thus, very different, in fact, we are all different”. During the process of creation of the poster, Dar Al Naiam never lost sight of audiences, and decided to represent this diversity through a design which is rich in details, sizes and shapes, all of them surrounded by a corporal unit that could be seen as ‘Mama Africa’. However, it is difficult to determine whether this shape corresponds to a female or a male body. The artist seems to be hence incorporating man in the process of emancipation of women. This is not just a common feature in films made by female eyes, but also, by men directors such the Senegalese Ousmane Sembène or Cheick Oumar Sissoko. In fact, the painter herself has not described the figure as a man or woman so far. Instead she refers to it as a ‘unique and static figure, with patterns and details that induce some movement’.

For Yunaki Films, it has been a daunting challenge to represent the level of detail and the laborious method of Dar Al Naim’s work. Yet this challenge has been successfully met, since the video, enriched by Rasha’s music – a Sudanese artist coming from a numerous family of artists and intellectuals – manages to portrays the environment of creation of the artist, and anticipates the spirit of the festival, where the boundaries between Córdoba, Africa and the Arab World melt, reminding us of a very rich and multicultural historic legacy.

Dar Al Naim, who studied in Oxford and has exhibited in that city, as well as in London and Khartoum, among others, has postponed her trip back to Khartoum in order to be with us during the festival. The opening ceremony will enjoy her participation, where she will present the awards to the winners of the children’s painting competition based on the painting that she designed for the FCAT poster.

"Flower Girl" Opens at UK Cinemas from October 4 and Premieres in U.S

On the freedom that comes with age

Freeman: "Doesn't matter if it's morning or night. Friend hands you a glass, you look him in the eye and say 'Cheers.'"

On working in Hollywood as a 50+ actor

Freeman: "You feel like you feel. Age is arbitrary. Some days on the golf course, I feel like I'm 90. Other days, 50."

Kline: "It's not how old you are but how you are old, as the saying goes. Actors don't have ages—we have age ranges. But I have to wear a hearing aid in this movie and let my hair and beard go white, so I felt every bit my age."

On the passage of time

Douglas: "You don't change that much. The kid in you is still there. You're supposed to get wise and more mature, but you have the same foibles, insecurities, good things, bad things."

Freeman: "I never thought I would reach this age. Really. I was fairly certain that with my lifestyle, it would have been truncated some time back. I was always the one who dared to jump out the second-story window."

De Niro: "You know the end is near, not that you think it's going to happen to you. You read the obits and see somebody passed who shouldn't have. You feel, "Wow, he was so young." It's a bit of luck just being here.

On their on-set chemistry

Director, Jon Turteltaub: "I was worried about these legends gelling, but one boisterous dinner together was all it took. Michael was instantly team quarterback, Kevin was class clown, Morgan was the lovable troublemaker and Bobby was the cool, aloof one. It was a lot like other friendships between men. The more they got to know each other, the more they insulted each other."
