Who Says the Economy Does Not Lose Any Money To Film Piracy?

The Institute for Policy Innovation claims that film piracy is costing the U.S. economy $20.5 billion annually.
But seriously as I read on Cheezburger, it is misleading, because that sum also returns to boost the economy as the pirates invest or spend the billions of dollars in the same economy. So, who are the real losers?

The Motion Picture Association of America funded a report that found that piracy was costing studios $6.1 billion a year. So, if the U.S economy is losing $20.5 billion annually and the studios lose only $6.1 billion annually, what of the remaining $14.4 billion?

“It says that a dollar less in film spending actually has a larger impact since it impacts other parts of the economy,” said Koleman Strumpf, an economist at the University of Kansas School of Business. “But if file-sharing leads to less spending on films, consumers have more money to spend which will completely offset these effects. There is no multiplier effect at all.”

Poor countries have more piracy because media costs too much -- report.

New Film and Social Action Campaign Take On School Violence Crisis

CHICAGO, Aug. 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The pressure is palpable in the new movie trailer for "Eclipse," which focuses the lens on what does belong in school - happy, safe children, and what should never be present in schools: violence. A prequel to the upcoming indie feature "The Other One" from Producer Grace McPhillips, this short narrative film was also created to support the social action campaign tied to the film's "Declare Non-Violence Videos" (DNVs).

(Photo: )
(Photo: )

Writer/Director Joe Steiff and "Eclipse" Editor Graham Metzger create a surreal school setting, idyllic and all too familiar. "These acts of violence have happened with such frequency," said Metzger, "and as a father, you believe the schools your kids attend are safe, but as we've seen, violence isn't picky."

Recently the film and DNV campaign were featured in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's News Digest, and McPhillips has been approached by children's health organizations about showing "Eclipse" to prompt what can be a difficult discussion. "This is exactly what we were hoping for, and we're thrilled to prove that narrative storytelling can intrigue audiences AND promote causes just as well as documentaries," says McPhillips.

In partnership with activist organizations Cure Violence, Build Chicago, and UCAN, the first batch of DNVs were released at last week, featuring student actors from the film projects. Producers Grace McPhillips and Elizabeth Theiss filmed additional interviews with youth from the partner organizations all month and are actively inviting you to Declare Your World Non-Violent at the project's website,

While films that tackle social issues in documentary style have wide access to grant funding, narrative filmmakers with the same goal find their options limited. In a bold and grassroots fashion, the makers of "The Other One" are currently in the midst of their final fundraising campaign, having raised $30k of their $75k budget entirely through individual donors giving tax-deductible donations on the crowd-funding platform Indiegogo. "The Other One" will tour the festival circuit this winter, but "Eclipse" is set for a FREE online release on December 14th 2013, the one-year anniversary of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. Steiff stated, "This film is in remembrance of those affected by the violence, and in hope that we can find a way to end it."

This is a brave, layered film that challenges the wisdom of victory at any price. Both of its central characters would slip easily into conventional plot formulas, but Bahrani looks deeply into their souls and finds so much more. Read full review

Flawed but different, well-crafted and consistently powerful, At Any Price is the best film about impoverished farmers in the economic agricultural crisis since Jean Renoir’s "The Southerner." Read full review

Here's another film, along with "Mud," that's in the American grain, but a genetically conditioned grain of unforgiving fathers and overweening ambition. It's powerful stuff. Read full review

Terrence Howard Makes A Better Nelson Mandela than Idris Elba

Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard's portrayal of Nelson Mandela in the new biopic "Winnie Mandela" by accomplished South African director Darrell J. Roodt (Sarafina!, 1992, Cry, the Beloved Country, 1995, and Academy Award nominated Yesterday, 2004) is more convincing of the real life personality from his youth to old age than Idris Elba's portrayal in Justin Chadwick's "Mandela" and of course Jennifer Hudson's "Winnie Mandela" is more accomplished than Naomie Harris' brave attempt to capture the iconic character of the most celebrated wife of the great Madiba in motion picture. We can actually re-title Idris Elba's Mandela as "Idris Elba: Long Walk To Mandela".

Idris Elba does not look or act like Nelson Mandela. He looks more like a character from Alex Haley's Roots: The Saga of an American Family.

The best portrayal of Nelson Mandela in old age is Morgan Freeman in Clint Eastwood's 2009 biographical sports drama "Invictus". And the worst, should be Danny Glover who was not convincing in his portrayal of the great South African anti-apartheid hero in the HBO biopic "Mandela" (1987). He did not look like Mandela and he played the role with more of his African American accent than Mandela’s Black South African accent.

This official trailer of the historic epic film on the Biafran War "Half of A Yellow Sun" shows Nollywood diva Genevieve Nnaji looking so well in her small, but unforgettable role as "Ms. Adebayo" with a cigarette in her left hand.
And this finally ends the ignorant reports and rumours that her part was edited out of the film, a fantastic adaptation of the award winning novel of the same title by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Grand Seduction To Open 2013 Calgary International Film Festival

"The Grand Seduction is a laugh-out-loud comedy, and we're overjoyed to present the Western Canadian premier of this major release. The film is a who's who of talent from across Canada, from director Don McKellar and the incredible cast, to co-writer Michael Dowse, who is well known in Calgary and abroad for Fubar and others. Last year's Opening Gala was the largest and most talked about in the festival's history, and we look forward to an even bigger night this year." – Steve Schroeder, Executive Director, The Calgary International Film Festival.

In The Grand Seduction, we follow along as a small Newfoundland fishing town looks for a new lease on life. Plans for a lucrative factory contract in tiny Tickle Head are contingent on the town’s ability to secure a resident doctor—and none have jumped on board. Things are looking grim, until Murray French (Brendan Gleeson) concocts an elaborate scheme and enlists his neighbours to charm a big-city doctor (Taylor Kitsch) to stay behind.

McKellar returns to the director’s chair for The Grand Seduction, teaming up with writer Michael Dowse (Fubar, Goon), for a remake of Ken Scott’s 2001 film Le Grande Séduction (Seducing Doctor Lewis). Working with a stellar cast that includes Irish heavyweight Gleeson and Canadian film legend Gordon Pinsent, McKellar also snagged blockbuster action star Kitsch and iconic comedian Mary Walsh for this Canadian comedic gem.

“Since 1999, the Calgary International Film Festival has delighted and entertained audiences in the Calgary region and provided an opportunity to celebrate diverse and unique stories from Canada and around the world,” said the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. “The Grand Seduction features some of Canada’s brightest talent and showcases beautiful landscapes in Newfoundland and Labrador. On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to commend the Calgary International Film Festival and its partners for promoting Canadian cinema and enriching the cultural life of Alberta.”

“We’re so very proud to support the Calgary International Film Festival and this outstanding opening night gala,” said Heather Klimchuk, Alberta Culture Minister. “This evening is a perfect opportunity to showcase Alberta’s home-grown talent and content, our award-winning crews and our vibrant screen-based production industry that make Alberta such a great place to make films.”

“Thanks to the Calgary International Film Festival’s passion for promoting and encouraging Canadian talent, the visibility of our filmmakers is being raised around the city, throughout the province and across the country,” said Carolle Brabant, Telefilm Canada’s Executive Director “Innovative public-private partnerships, with industry players like CIFF, result in more Canadians having the opportunity to experience great homegrown films like Don McKellar’s The Grand Seduction.”

“The Canada Media Fund is pleased to be joining other industry representatives, business leaders, government officials and all Albertans in celebrating Canadian talent and productions at CIFF’s opening night festivities,” said Valerie Creighton, CMF President and CEO. “The Grand Seduction is an excellent example of Canadian talent from all parts of the country working together to bring a world-class production to life that can be enjoyed by both Canadians and international audiences alike.”

CIFF’s Opening Gala screening of The Grand Seduction takes place on Thursday, September 19, at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium. The 11-day festival continues through to September 29, showing nearly 200 multi-genre films.

Tickets for the September 19th Opening Gala are $75.00 each and go on sale at 10:00 am on August 15th. TICKETS CAN BE PURCHASED ONLINE AT:

Announcement Starts 100-Day Countdown to Film's Release in Theatres Around The World on November 22

SANTA MONICA, Calif. and LONDON, Aug. 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- With 100 days and counting until the November 22 worldwide launch of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the second installment of Lionsgate's (NYSE: LGF) global blockbuster Hunger Games franchise, the Company announced today that it will host a Catching Fire world premiere in London on November 11.

Catching Fire will open day-and-date with its domestic release in nearly every major international territory. The first Hunger Games film was the 13th highest-grossing North American release of all time on its way to generating nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire stars Academy Award® winner Jennifer Lawrence alongside Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone and Jeffrey Wright, with Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland.

The film begins as Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow (Sutherland) prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games, The Quarter Quell - a competition that could change Panem forever.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is directed by Francis Lawrence, from a screenplay by Simon Beaufoy and Michael DeBruyn, based upon the novel "Catching Fire" by Suzanne Collins and produced by Nina Jacobson and Jon Kilik.

Render To Caesar, A New Star-Studded Nollywood Crime Thriller

From the stable of Mighty Man Entertainment Limited comes a soon-to-be-released crime/suspense thriller entitled “RENDER TO CAESAR”. The story’s synopsis centres on two friends who return home from abroad to join a special program in the Nigerian police force as detectives assigned to hunt and apprehend a psychotic crime lord whose nefarious activities are an embarrassment to the Government.

Render to Caesar features a formidable array of Nigeria’s foremost acting talent including Gbenga Akinnagbe, international star of the popular HBO TV series ‘The Wire’, as well as several Hollywood movies (The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, Edge of Darkness, The Savages, Lottery Ticket), Omoni Oboli (The Figurine, Anchor Baby), Wale Ojo (Phone Swap) and Lucky Ejim (The Tenant). No less outstanding is the supporting cast which includes amongst others Bimbo Manuel, Dede Mabiaku, Kalu Ikeagwu, Chris Iheuwa, Tomi Odunsi and Kehinde Bankole. Also featuring in cameo turns are Steve Onu (aka “Yaw” of Wazobia FM), MC Abbey, Yvonne “Vixen” Ekwere and Femi Jacobs.

Produced and directed by Desmond Ovbiagele, with Nnamdi Oboli & Omoni Oboli as co-producers, Render to Caesar was sumptuously photographed by John Askwith (whose credits include camera duty on the upcoming Hollywood remake of ‘Robocop’) and is scheduled for cinema release later in 2013.

Desmond Ovbiagele is the son of one of Nigeria’s celebrated columnists, Helen Ovbiagele. He dumped a rewarding bank job for Nollywood and like the popular Kunle Afolayan who also left banking for film making, Desmond knows that he has made the right decision and this fantastic movie is his baptism of fire as a director in the competitive Nigerian film industry.

Desmond Ovbiagele.

Two friends return home from abroad to join the Bureau of Detectives under an ambitious government scheme to develop future leaders of the much-maligned Police Force. Dipo & Pade are assigned to the Lagos State Police Command with the daunting mission to hunt and apprehend a notorious robber called Caesar who continues to wage a harsh campaign of ruthless attacks across the State.

Cynically chronicling the investigation’s lack of progress through constant and derogatory news stories and editorials is the acclaimed but prejudiced online newspaper entrepreneur, Alero Benson, whose campaign of calumny adds further pressure to the new detectives. And just when the Police believe they’ve finally boxed Caesar into a corner, he responds with a joker that not only turns the game on its head, but threatens to alter the lives of its key players forever.
