This is My Mirror of Nollywood



NOLLYWOOD MIRROR, a new quarterly publication that will showcase Nollywood, the largest film industry in Africa is launching in May, 2013.

The maiden edition is a special focus on the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held on Saturday April 20, 2013, in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
It is loaded with features and pictures on Nollywood, recognizing those who have been supporting the fastest growing film industry in the world, including Prince Tonye Princewill who has been supporting the productions of movies like Kajola and Figurine, Bank of Industry's funding of the film adaptation of Half of A Yellow Sun, the historical fiction on Biafra by best selling author Chimamanda Ngozi-Adichie and Film House cinemas and how much Mnet's Africa Magic has done to make Nollywood movies popular on cable TV in Africa.

The cover shows the AMAA symbol and Kenneth Gyang, the Nigerian director whose debut feature Confusion Na Wa won the highly coveted awards for Best Nigerian Film and Best Film.

Nollywood Mirror will be published in paperback, hardcover and e-copy versions for global distribution. “Mood Indigo” Opens in Theatres Today



Altuglas®, a partner of the film “Mood Indigo” of Michel Gondry




PARIS, April 26, 2013, PRNewswire - Altuglas International, a subsidiary of the Arkema Group is a partner of the film Mood Indigo coming to theater today. This is the film adaptation of the eponymous book of the french author Boris Vian published in 1947.



Michel Gondry, the famous Director has swarmed futuristic and surreal ideas. Altuglas International brought his personal touch by providing nanostructured Altuglas ShieldUp produced in France at St Avold (57) for Limovian, the fully transparent limousine.

This is Michel Gondry who imagined this Transparent limousine. Dubbed LimoVian (The Limousine of Boris Vian), the amazing car crosses the movie like Chloe (Audrey Tautou), Colin (Romain Duris) and Chick (Omar Sy), a full-fledged character.

More than six months of work were required to design team from Peugeot to assembly the limo. They grafted pieces and accessories Peugeot 404 and realize its interior.

The transparent parts were made in Altuglas ShieldUp. This acrylic (polymethylmethacrylate) combines two components – PMMA and an elastomer, structured at the nanoscale – which provides complete transparency while optimizing other properties such as mechanical and chemical resistance. Altuglas ShieldUp is the result of 10 years of Research and won last year’s prize Potier for innovation.

Heated to 180° C for fifteen minutes to be softened, it has either been forced under vacuum or blown with compressed air (8 bar). It took many attempts for the plastic transformer ABP to obtain the ideal shape for each part.

On theatre in France, Belgium and Switzerland since Wednesday April 24th. Furthermore Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou and Omar Sy, Gad Elmaleh, Aissa Maiga, Charlotte Le Bon, Philippe and Alain Chabat Torreton are showing this film

Have You Seen Ghanaian Movie Star Prince Osei in The Dead?


Prince David Osei is a scene from zombie war movie "The Dead".

Popular Ghanaian actor Prince David Osei and I met at the 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held last weekend in Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa State in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. He was the toast of the red carpet as his fans were shouting and wolf-whistling his name at the Ox-Bow Lake boat regatta and traditional wrestling event in the morning and also later in the evening for the main awards last Saturday. Most of them were girls and women who posed for pictures with him and one pretty actress from the University of Benin asked me for his contact details. David played leading roles in two Ghanaian movies ‘Wannabe’ directed by Pascal Amanfo and "Off The Hook" directed by Andy Boyo which were submitted for the 2013 AMAA, but surprisingly did not make the nominations. He told me that his best international movie so far is "The Dead", a 2010 zombie war thriller that is a must see for anyone who has not seen it.



The Story:
When the last evacuation flight out of war-torn Africa crashes off the coast, American Air Force Engineer Lieutenant Brian Murphy (ROB FREEMAN) emerges as the sole survivor in a land where the dead are returning to life and attacking the living.

On the run in a hostile and inhospitable parched landscape, where sudden death lurks around every sun-burnished corner, Murphy has to use his wits and ingenuity if he is to get home alive to his family.

When Murphys path clashes with that of Sergeant Daniel Dembele (PRINCE DAVID OSEI), whose village has been torn apart by the reanimated dead, they join forces.

Nominees and Winners of the 2013 Africa Movie Academy Awards



The 9th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) with the theme "AFRICA ONE" held last Saturday April 20, 2013, at the Gloryland Cultural Center in Yenagoa, capital of Bayelsa State. The event was co-hosted by Nollywood diva Dakore Egbuson, comedian Ayo Makun, Adjetey Anang and Ama K Abebrese British/Ghanaian television presenter and actress who won AMAA Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2011. The red carpet event included spectacular live performances by famous Nigerian singers P-Square, Banky W, Flavour Nabania, Bayelsa State Cultural Troop, Khlena Demza, Kwelatebza (South Africa), Groove Magic (Malawi), Waje (Nigeria), Timi Dakolo (Nigeria) and comedians included AY Makun, G Bone and Funny Bone. Timi Dakolo's awesome song "Great Nation" got more applause than the national anthem of Nigeria as the audience gave him a well deserved standing ovation.

ENDING CORRUPTION IN NIGERIA: EVERY HELP IS NEEDED

BERLIN, 11 April 2013 / PRNewswire Africa / - Abuja, the capital of the oil rich nation Nigeria, a “planned city” built in the 1980s, is one of the wealthiest and most expensive capitals in Africa.

Very few Nigerians can afford living there. Shanty towns with mass poverty, high unemployment, and poor sanitation is a much more common environment for the vast majority of the population.

The reason for this? Weak governance and endemic corruption.

Nigeria's corruption troubles are well known. Graft is costing the federal government billions of dollars each year. It deprives ordinary citizens of basic services and exacerbates social problems like crime and insecurity. Because of a lack of effective and appropriate sanctions against offenders, many in Nigeria see corruption and embezzlement as risks that are worth taking.

Tackling corruption in Nigeria was the subject of a meeting in February, hosted by the Open Society Institute for West Africa.

The meeting provided an arena to discuss these issues and how Transparency International could support anticorruption efforts in Nigeria. Participants, a mix of activists, academics, and community leaders spoke hard truths: the magnitude of systemic corruption, the lack of adequate strategies and resources to confront corruption, and the need for a strong anticorruption movement in Nigeria. They stressed that TI could play a key role in amplifying local voices against corruption, strengthening advocacy capacity, and offering expertise and knowledge.

Soji Apampa from Integrity Nigeria strongly felt that Nigerian civil society organisations needed to learn from the wider anticorruption movement to make a stronger impact at home.

Yet, there were also reasons not to lose hope. The millions of Nigerians who took the streets in 2012 to protest removal of the fuel subsidy and poor management of oil revenues demonstrated that people from all walks of life were ready to speak up against corruption with a connected voice through rallies, strikes and technology.

For an organisation like Transparency International, this is good news. Empowered citizens can engage in the fight against corruption. From Kenya to Madagascar, this is what Transparency International chapters are doing. By giving a voice to victims and witnesses of corruption, educating the youth on integrity, and helping journalists expose graft, Transparency International works to ensure that everyone feels responsible for making change happen.

“Every help, big and small, is needed to succeed, and citizens should be part of the solution”, according to Auwal Musa Rafsanjani from the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre in Nigeria.

Change will not happen overnight in Nigeria. It will require collective resolve and decisive action.

Lilian Ekeanyanwu of the Technical Unit on Governance & Anti-Corruption Reform concluded that any serious effort to end corruption should focus both on “building public pressure and reforming institutions and professional bodies”.

Nigeria was ranked 139 out of 174 countries in the 2012 Corruption Perceptions Index. Expectations are high that Transparency International will lend a helping hand. Transparency International stands ready to take this challenge and work with local stakeholders for a corruption-free Nigeria.

Technology cannot disconnect me from my personal relationships.
I don't look at the computer at home after work. And this is my choice.
My laptop is my news desk or story board and not rendezvous. And cannot replace unwinding at the club or local pub.

From the street to the internet the heart still beats from our brains and not from our computers.

I don't blame technology for our distractions, but ourselves, because we made technology and technology did not make us and so like the light bulb, radio and TV, we can always turn it on or turn it off. What causes addiction to technology are not the tools and toys (gadgets), but our defeatism and escapism. Like blogging to me is another form of writing and social networking is the new Pen Pal. So, no matter how absorbing technology may be, you have the power to use it as a tool or a toy to even enhance your interpersonal communication and boost your intimate and corporate relationships with others and use technology to break down all barriers and limits of communication which is what we are doing here anyway and if we can get multiple orgasms from mobile phone sex, then technology cannot stop us from having our best life now. Man made the machine, the machine did not make man. Enjoy.

WASHINGTON, April 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), a project of the Center for Public Integrity, released today its first of many reports from a 15-month investigation that cracks open the historically impenetrable world of offshore tax havens.

Drawing from a leaked trove of 2.5 million digital files, ICIJ led what may be the largest cross border journalism collaboration in history.

ICIJ's investigation opens the secrets of more than 120,000 offshore companies and trusts and nearly 130,000 individuals and agents, exposing hidden dealings of politicians, con artists, and the mega-rich in more than 170 countries. Secrecy for Sale: Inside the Global Offshore Money Maze , ICIJ's largest investigative reporting project in its 15-year history, is available at www.icij.org/offshore.

The stories released today by the ICIJ and its partner outlets around the world are the first installment in an ongoing series. An initial group of stories will run between April 3 and April 15, 2013 with more reporting to follow throughout the year as ICIJ and its partners continue the investigation.

"This investigation lifts the curtain on the offshore system and provides a transparent look into the secret world of tax havens and the individuals and companies that use and benefit from them," said Gerard Ryle, Director of the ICIJ. "We already knew how secret and inaccessible the offshore industry is, but we were surprised by how vast and far reaching it is. It draws its clients not only from the world's super-wealthy, but also from everyday professionals from all around the world."

The files identify the individuals behind the covert companies and private trusts based in the British Virgin Islands, the Cook Islands, Singapore and other offshore havens. They include American doctors and dentists and middle-class Greek villagers as well as Russian corporate executives, Eastern European and Indonesian billionaires, Wall Street fraudsters, international arms dealers and families and associates of long-time dictators.

Among the investigation's key findings:

Government officials and their families and associates in Azerbaijan, Russia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, Canada, Mongolia and other countries have embraced the use of covert companies and bank accounts.

The mega-rich use complex offshore structures to own mansions, yachts, art masterpieces and other assets, gaining tax advantages and anonymity not available to average people.

Many of the world's top's banks – including UBS, Clariden and Deutsche Bank – have aggressively worked to provide their customers with secrecy-cloaked companies in the British Virgin Islands and other offshore hideaways.

A well-paid industry of accountants, middlemen and other operatives has helped offshore patrons shroud their identities and business interests, providing shelter in many cases to money laundering or other misconduct.

Ponzi schemers and other large-scale fraudsters routinely use offshore havens to pull off their shell games and move their ill-gotten gains.

While reporting by the ICIJ and its partners shows that many users of offshore are engaged in legitimate transactions, the project team's investigations raise questions about the lack of transparency, lax law enforcement and illegal practices that are prevalent in the offshore world.

"This investigation was the most extensive in our history. The collection of leaked information, totaling more than 260 gigabytes of data, includes corporate files, emails, account ledgers, and other records that show cash transfers, incorporation dates and links between individuals and companies. It is believed to be one of the largest collections of leaked data gathered and analyzed by journalists.

The files illustrate how offshore financial secrecy has spread aggressively around the globe, allowing the wealthy to avoid taxes, fueling corruption and economic woes in rich and poor nations. The current banking crisis in Cyprus is one example of how the offshore system can impact an entire country's financial stability.

The ICIJ worked with 86 investigative journalists from 46 countries and used data mining software and old fashioned shoe leather reporting to unveil the previously hidden but thriving world of fraud, tax dodging and political corruption.

To analyze the documents, ICIJ collaborated with journalists from The Guardian and the BBC in the U.K., Le Monde in France, Suddeutsche Zeitung and Norddeutscher Rundfunk in Germany , The Washington Post, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and 31 other media partners around the world.

The reporters and editors on the project team thoroughly fact-checked the data and cross-referenced it with other information, including court records, government reports and financial databases. Team members interviewed hundreds of experts, government officials, attorneys, offshore clients and other sources around the world.

An interactive, live Q&A with Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski, moderated by Times film writer Rebecca Keegan, will follow the screening in the IMAX® theatre at New York City's AMC Loews 34th Street 14 on Monday, April 15, at 8:00 p.m. ET. Oblivion opens nationwide on April 19, with special IMAX previews starting April 18 at 8:00 p.m. local time.

The post-screening Q&A will be simulcast via satellite to nine additional IMAX theatres in Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego and Virginia Beach.
